It’s that time of year again! The time where your home seems to collect ample amounts of snack sized candy. From candy corn to bite sized Snickers bars, there seems to be a never-ending supply of sugary snacks this time of year and it’s hard to resist the temptation when it’s a small portion, compared to a full-size treat.  Did you know that a single serving of Candy Corn, 19 pieces, has over 28 grams of sugar which equals 7 teaspoons of sugar? Small but sugary!

While Halloween candy can seem like the more sensible choice when looking for a sweet snack, we’re sharing 5 tricks for avoiding the dangerous Halloween Candy Temptations.

Trick #1: Buy Candy You Don’t Like

It seems simple enough, but if you don’t like something, you’re not going to eat it! When purchasing candy for trick-or-treaters or your family, make a wise choice with the candy you purchase and make it something you’re not going to be inclined to eat if there are extras laying around the house. Not a fan of sour candy? Purchase a bag of Sour Patch Kids and War Heads. Since you don’t like them, no need to worry about the temptation!

Trick #2: Hide the Candy

Out of sight, out of mind! If you’re inclined to reach your hand into the candy jar every time you’re in the kitchen, try hiding the candy from yourself. Sometimes eating candy is a habit because it’s sitting right in front of you. If the candy is harder to reach or access it will be easier to resist the temptation of eating it. If you purchase candy ahead of Halloween night, don’t open the bag of candy until it’s time for trick-or-treating! This way, you’ll have the candy open only for Halloween festivities and eliminate the time you have to sneak a couple of pieces.

Trick #3: Set a Healthy Limit

Moderation and portion control are always the key to staying healthy while still allowing yourself a treat. Before you purchase candy for your home, set boundaries for yourself. Think about your habits and tendencies and come up with a game plan on your indulgences. Maybe you allow yourself to have one small piece of candy each night or set a limit that you’re only allowed to have 3 pieces of candy in the weeks leading up to Halloween. Be honest with yourself and set realistic expectations and boundaries. It’s important to allow yourself to indulge your sweet tooth from time to time because when you deny yourself, you’re opening the possibilities for an all-out binge.

Trick #4: Keep Track of The Wrappers

What makes Halloween Candy so enticing is its small size. When they’re so small, it’s easy to keep eating them without thinking much about it. To keep yourself accountable and have a better idea of just how much you’re indulging, hold on to all the candy wrappers you consume. Having a visual reminder of how many pieces of candy you’ve had will help you make better choices when it comes to eating more candy in the future. Holding yourself accountable can help you resist over-indulging.

Trick #5: Make Smarter Decisions

While Halloween Candy seems like the perfect Fall treat, when you get a sweet tooth craving, maybe make a healthier choice and choose to indulge in a healthier sweet option like fruit or your favorite low-calorie dessert. It’s important that you’re looking at the amount of sugar that is inside each of the small pieces of candy. You may be able to have something much more substantial with less sugar and calories. While a small indulgence is okay occasionally, it’s important to remain consistent when you’re on a healthy journey.
