It’s that time of year again – time to send the kids Back to School, and that means one thing, it’s time to get back into a routine. Now that summer is winding down to a close and the kids are heading back to school, it’s the perfect time for you to start making weight loss apart of your busy routine.

Leading a busy lifestyle can be one of the biggest downfalls for keeping your weight loss routine on track. You’re more inclined to make unhealthy decisions because they can tend to be the quickest and easiest options to take. When things start to get hectic in your life, throwing your children’s busy schedule on top of everything else going on can make getting through the school and work week seem impossible.

Here are our top 5 tips for making weight loss apart of your Back to School routine to ensure you’re staying on track all school year long.

Plan and Prep Your Meals

This tip shouldn’t come as a big shock to anyone, but it can be considered one of the most important things to do for weight loss and keeping yourself on a routine and disciplined. Use the weekends to start your week off right and make a plan. Get a pen and a piece of paper and use a calendar to see how your week is going to shape up. Between school, work, sports and events, the week can get hectic and it can seem impossible to keep up without staying organized.

Make a list of what is happening each day for each person. Take inventory on what nights you’re going to be home earlier than others and think of easy, but healthy meals that you’ll be able to enjoy when you’re busy. Be realistic and honest with yourself about what you’re able to do. Then, make a list of things you’ll need at the store and spend a few hours of your weekend stocking up for the week. Some people tend to hit the grocery store on their way home from work, but this will steal unnecessary time from you during the week. When your meals are planned, you’ll know exactly what you will need and won’t have to make any unnecessary trips to the store and can spend more time focusing on other things going on in your life.

Once you have everything you need, take a few hours to prep what you’re able to. Make yourself healthy, on-the-go lunches, snacks, and even dinners that will be easy for you to heat up and enjoy during the week, and ultimately help save yourself from hitting up the local fast-food place on your way home or for lunch. Cut up veggies and have them on hand to snack on if you have a long day ahead of you. The key is to plan your week and stay ahead of the hecticness. The less stress you must deal with, the easier it is to stay on track!

Create an Exercise Routine

An important part of any weight loss program is keeping up with regular exercise. It’s no secret that exercise is a vital part of living a healthy life but sometimes it’s easy to put it on the back burner. That’s why when life gets busy, it’s important that you create an exercise routine that works into your schedule and ensures that you’re able to squeeze it in no matter what life is throwing your way. If you find that it’s easy for you to skip a workout because you’re not held accountable for showing up and getting it done, find yourself a workout buddy and plan together. This way, you can both hold each other accountable for showing up and getting your workout in, no matter what. Another important tip is to come up with a “Plan-B” for your workouts. It can seem like some days are too hectic and you just can’t seem to get everything done that day, no matter how hard you try. When these days occur and you can’t find time for your workout, come up with another plan to get your workout done. Know that you can’t make it to the gym? Try an at-home workout or take a quick jog around your neighborhood. Whatever it may be, getting some exercise is better than not exercising at all!

Keep Track

When trying to lose weight or lead a healthy lifestyle, keeping track of what you’re eating, drinking, and doing is a great way to hold yourself accountable and see what is and isn’t working in your life. When you start reflecting on your habits, you’re able to start adjusting your life. You may see a pattern such as being too busy on Wednesdays and you keep missing your workouts week to week. This will help you better plan your workouts for the next week and find a way to squeeze the Wednesday workout in somewhere else. Or, you might find that by the end of the week, you’re running out of food that you pre-cooked and pre-bought at the beginning of the week and you end up making unhealthy choices. This will help you in future weeks to take into consideration more of what you’re eating and adjust your shopping trips and meal prepping sessions. By keeping track, you’re staying organized and making your weight loss approach work for your life.

Have Healthy Options Always Available

When life gets too busy, it’s easy to slip up and fall off the wagon. Being prepared and making eating healthy easy and accessible is the key to being successful. Snacking is always a killer when you’re trying to lose weight. It’s the unhealthy snacks that can easily be over enjoyed and have big consequences. To make snacking on unhealthy options less appealing, prepare healthy snacks like cut up veggies. Make these snacks easily available and in plain sight. By having them in sight and ready to go, you’re less likely to choose something unhealthy. These snacks are also not just weight loss program friendly but are great options for the whole family as well! When you’re prepping for you kids lunches each day, make a little extra for yourself and making eating healthy a priority for the whole family.

Find Me Time

Even though Back to School time can get a little hectic, it’s important for you to find time for yourself and ways to decompress during the week. Stress eating is a big factor in people’s unhealthy eating habits. It’s important to keep a balanced life and not let yourself become too overwhelmed or exhausted. Remember, getting a full night’s rest each night is important for losing weight. Research has shown that a sleepy brain craves junk food and lacks the control to turn it down. That’s why it’s important to make sure you’re getting between 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night. Also, keep an eye on what and when you’re eating. Avoid eating meals too close to bedtime. Make time for you and make sure you’re taking time to do the things you love. Give yourself a pedicure and have a nice bubble bath. Do whatever it is that makes you happy and reward yourself for all you accomplish each day!
