When we think about the time of year where we’re most likely to pack on a few pounds, wintertime normally comes to mind with all the heavy comfort foods we like to consume to help keep us warm and cozy throughout the colder months, and the easy to skip over workouts because it’s simply too cold to leave the house. While comfort foods may make you gain a few extra pounds over the holidays, once you reach the warmer months, there are a few unlikely suspects that may cause you to gain weight! Since it’s the beginning of summer, now is a great time to learn a few tips on how to avoid those pesky summer pounds while still enjoying the season!

Why am I gaining weight?

The summer months are always jam-packed with fun activities like pool days with your friends, and backyard barbeques with your family. Don’t forget the week-long vacations at your favorite beach town, which include numerous tasty snacks and meals. But did you know that the heat has a negative effect on our bodies and weight loss? When we’re in the heat, our bodies naturally begin to slow down to help conserve our energy, so we don’t overheat. During the hot summer months, we’re more prone to dehydration which slows down our system causing our bodies to burn fewer calories throughout the day.

Tips for Avoiding Weight Gain

Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate.

It’s always important to keep hydrated, especially in the heat! Ensure that you’re drinking plenty of water, and maybe drink a little extra during these hot months. It’s recommended to drink eight 8 oz. glasses of water a day. During the summer months, try drinking more, like 10 8 oz. glasses! When you’re keeping your body hydrated, you’re ensuring that your body is not overheating and you’re still burning off those calories!

If you’re struggling to make sure you’re getting your 8 glasses of water every day, summertime is the perfect time to experiment! Try adding in some fresh fruits such as grapefruit juice, lemon juice, or toss in some raspberries. Are fruits not your thing? Add a few cucumber slices for a fresh, crisp taste, or throw in a few mint or basil leaves for an even more refreshment! The longer you allow the add-ins to seep, the tastier each cup of water will  be! Be creative and have some fun coming up with different ideas and combinations! The key to summer time is to get in as much water as possible!

Choose Healthy!

The best thing about summertime? All the fresh options that are available to you! It seems like everywhere you turn in the summer time there is a farmer’s market, a roadside stand, or even your backyard that has plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables available to you. Not only are farmers markets great for your summertime meals, but they’re great on your bank account, saving you money on the fresh foods you normally overpay for at the grocery store! While you’re there, get inspiration for new dishes, and new ingredients. Pick up a vegetable you’ve never cooked with and ask for suggestions for recipes!

Get Moving!

When the weather is warm, there is so much to do outside, especially exercising. When it’s cold outside, you’re usually limited to the gym and your home to get your exercise in, but now is the time to take advantage of the beautiful outdoors. Take a run around your neighborhood or take your bike out for a nice ride! Take advantage of your lunch break at work and walk a few laps outside with your co-workers. Now is the time to get your whole family involved. After dinner, make time for your family to take a stroll around the neighborhood. There are so many activities that are fun, but keep you moving. Take advantage of the outdoors and you’ll find yourself keeping those pesky warm weather pounds off!

Stick with The Plan

During summertime, there are a lot of temptations around every corner. Every weekend it seems that someone you know is throwing a cookout, with greasy burgers, and carb heavy pasta salads. The key to surviving the summer without a serious weight gain is to stick to your weight loss program and use your tools and knowledge to be successful in tempting situations. At Motive Weight Loss Center, our Motive Weight Loss Coaches create a weight loss program that is designed for YOU. And the best thing about having a weight loss coaches is that they’re always available to you to help you make the best choices in any situation! Here are a few tips we suggest for sticking with your program this summer:

  1. Always Choose the Healthiest Option: Even though a greasy burger may smell great at a barbeque, opt for a nice piece of grilled chicken instead!
  2. Come Prepared: Not everyone is following the same weight loss program as you, so it’s important to come prepared. We recommend eating before you attend an event, that way you’re not hungry and eliminate the risk of a slip up. If you choose not to eat before, prepare yourself a meal at home and bring it with you! This way, you know how much and what you’re eating, but you’re still able to enjoy the meal with everyone else.
  3. Avoid Alcohol: A common drink in the summertime always seems to include alcohol. Alcohol, especially in the heat, dehydrates you, which slows down your body and your metabolism! Instead of sipping on a cocktail, make one of your own, minus the alcohol. You’ll feel more refreshed, while still sipping on something satisfying!

No matter the season, at Motive Weight Loss Center, we are more than just a weight loss program. Our Motive Weight Loss Coaches are here to educate, support, and empower you on your journey to the healthiest version of YOU.
